My guess: the money went to build big houses and buy fancy cars and planes, and into lux vacations and that kind of thing. Assorted persons promised to repay loans. The upshot for the losers in this game is years of poverty and drudgery.
The people who built all that fancy stuff got paid wages, while they were doing the work. Were they able to build anything lasting for themselves with the money they earned?
The question is, what can we expect the future to look like?
